Bishops, religious leaders to speak out on Immigration Reform

The Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee, WISDOM and MICAH have announced a joint press conference this Monday, April 10 to speak out on the issue of immigration reform.

The news conference will be held at Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 812 North Jackson Street at 2 p.m.

Roman Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Lutheran Bishop Paul Stumme-Diers and MICAH President Reverend Louis Sibley will be among Milwaukee’s religious leaders who will offer their comments at the event. "Immigration is not just a political and economic matter," says Bishop Stumme-Diers.

"The Scriptures of every major faith tradition speak loudly and clearly about the need to treat the foreigner in your midst with respect and compassion. Immigration policy is very clearly a moral issue."

On Monday, the religious and civic leaders will each make a statement, to be followed by a period of questions from the press.

Afterward, there will be a more open discussion between the religious leaders and the crowd that gathers in support.

Tens of thousands have taken to the streets in Milwaukee and around the nation to support immigrants.

Less than two weeks ago, Bishop Stumme-Diers led a delegation of clergy from WISDOM to Washington to speak to Senators on behalf of immigrants.

On Monday, another massive rally is planned for Washington D.C., which will include a caravan of cars and buses from Milwaukee.
