Community says farewell to Jasmine Owens


They came out by the thousands to say farewell to a little four-year-girl who was fatally shot in the head while playing outside in front of her home. Many who visited the New Pitts Mortuary had never met Jasmine Ariel (Juicy) Owens.

For the Sake of Aaron: Celebrating Our Black Men

"Men for All Seasons" by Charles Bibbs

Students, mentors and parents from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School stand on the steps of the famed DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago. They recently toured the museum and saw displays of famous African Americans who have made contributions to the fabric of America. The boys are part of the For The Sake of Aaron's "What Is A Man" mentoring program. Look for a story and more photos about the trip in next week's "Community Journal."


For The Sake of Aaron mentoring program receives $10,000 Helen Bader grant

The Helen Bader Foundation recently awarded the For The Sake of Aaron Mentoring Program a $10,000 grant.

The Dr. Terence M. Thomas Scholarship Fund, Inc. received the grant on behalf of the mentoring program, which will use the funds to continue the mentoring and tuition assistance for central city boys age 8 to 10. Read more
