The next Milwaukee police chief?
Activists differ on candidates
by Mikel Holt
There's a general consensus on what qualities Milwaukee’s next chief of police should possess, and also his or her priorities. But among Black law enforcement and community activists quizzed by the Community Journal over the past two weeks, there is significant disagreement as to whether the successor to Chief Nan Hegerty should be selected from among the ranks of four MPD candidates, or from the four 'outsiders' who have made the semi finalist list. MCJ sets yearlong focus
Our women, our treasures, our jewels
by Patricia O’Flynn Pattillo
We celebrated Sunday night, August 12, 2007! It was the highest attended anniversary celebration in our history. By Wednesday, we were brought back to the reality of our mission.
As staff was putting together the regular mid-week newspaper, minutes before the editor would have left to go the printer, gunshots buffeted the inner city summer clamor. Seven shots! Pow, pow pow pow, pow pow, pow!
In fast succession, they were clearly discernible as staffers fell to the floors of their offices for fear of misguided forays of gunfire. These are the kind of "wrong place at the wrong time" sequences that regrettably have become commonplace in Milwaukee's central community.
After the gunfire ceased--only two minutes in time frames--two autos bolted onto the sidewalk and teenagers rapidly fled the vehicles. Read more |

Civic activist and WE Energies Vice President Thelma Sias (right) shared a moment with MCJ anniversary co-chair and television personality DeMarco Morgan during the event last week. Sias will serve as the chair of next year’s event, which will follow a yearlong focus on women. (photo by Robert Bell)

Pulse of the Community

Question of the Week: "Many private schools require parental involvement at the school their child attends. Should public school also require parental involvement?"
Photos and question by Harry Kemp

Clever Hathaway: "Yes, I think this would be a great idea. Parents should check on their kids once or twice a week to see how they are doing." |

Dr. Joyce F. Kirk: "Yes. The ultimate support comes from the parents at home, at school and as role models. They should sign a contract with the school and commit to support their children. (Success) is more likely to occur. The child benefits, the family, the community and the wider society." |

Rahjee Shabazz: "Yes! I believe all parents should take a holistic approach in their kid’s education. That helps to make a strong family and an even stronger community." |

Yalonda Franklin: "Yes, I think this would help our children in their studies and their attitudes in school." |
