Noted activists warn rising racial tensions ‘Resegregating’ U.S.

by Hazel Trice Edney--NNPA Editor-in-Chief
Washington--More than 100 years since W.E.B. DuBois declared that the "color line" would be the key problem of the 20th Century, civil rights activists and race experts now say the problem of racial tensions are still so pervasive in the 21st Century that some have labeled it as a resegregation. "It’s undeniable that we are resegregating education in a dramatic way and we are also resegregating or becoming more segregated residentially than we were. Pulse of the Community

Question of the Week: "What can be done to make sure our students are made aware of fire safety procedures?"

Photos and question by Harry Kemp

Felicia Morris: "I feel we should let fire safety persons (representatives of the Milwaukee Fire Department) come into our community centers and our schools to teach the kids the importance of fire safety."

Felmers Chaney: "To have a fire drill in the school. Have a fire fighter come to the school and talk to the students about what to do when a fire happens. Then tell the kids to go home and share it with their families."

Rita Jean Beasley: "I feel like all teachings and training should start off in the homes like back in the old days."

Walter J. Triplett: "Training. You should start at home by training the kids first. You should have something on television about fire safety."
