Just Venting

Booklet on Black education a real eye opener

by Thomas E. Mitchell, Jr.
  Dear Community,
I was on vacation a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t do much of anything except read.

I wasn’t reading the latest hot Black or White fiction best-seller. And it wasn’t fiction either--which for as long as I’ve been reading for leisure has been my favorite genre, especially thrillers. More

Hey, 900 Black people to go and I-Witness and the "Milwaukee Community Journal" will have reached out and touched more than 253,000 Black families in Milwaukee. I use the number 253,000 based on one-census report, we know there are probably more like 300,000 Black people in the city of Milwaukee. In the next couple of weeks I-Witness will have covered the entire city, telling the good stories that go on in our community, I will also highlight many folks who I think were outstanding in my travels so stay tuned ...

Citizens, former police chief offer ideas to stem city violence

As an unidentified woman consoles him, paramedics treat a man who was shot on a central city street recently as he was walking to a party. Such senseless violence has the community concerned and determined to regain control of their neighborhoods. They’re demanding that their elected officials do something to stem the epidemic.   The end of summer has brought a new wave of shootings and all I can think of is that song, "Wild, Wild West."

The song was about the lawlessness on the West Coast. The term "Wild, Wild West" refers to the Old West where it was every man (and his gun) for himself. More

Kaleidoscope wants to know...

Young people under the age of 17 in the city of Milwaukee cannot be on the street after 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday and after 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. What do you think about this ordinance?

Photos by Harry Kemp

Iesha Harris: "I think this is very acceptable for people under the age of 17. Sometimes it dpends on maturity. But most people don’t know how mature teens are, but this is good for young people to stay out of trouble. And it’s good for adults to care."

Steven Riser: "I do not agree with this new law because students need more time for recreation. I think students need more time to get home and relax after school. Police get the wrong idea about young people in a group. We’re students coming home from school."

Felicia Weatherall: "Yes, I think that they should stop the young people on the streets that late because it’s for their safety."

Marco Clayton: "I feel that they shouldn’t give us the 10 p.m. curfew. Some of us know how to act after 10 p.m. weekdays or otherwise."

Election 2006
The Primaries

Voters to whet their appetites on an impressive menu of candidates before the main course in November

by MCJ Staff
Primary elections are often looked upon as an appetizer before the main course: the general election. And primaries, like appetizers, are often looked upon as a "take it or leave it" option that often gets skipped in favor of the main menu. More
