Pulse of the Community
Question of the Week: "How do you assess the business climate in Milwaukee for Black professionals?"
Photos and question by Harry Kemp

Sheila Payton: "Milwaukee has improved because of organizations like the Leader’s Forum, but it still lags behind other communities. However, I’m optimistic that as more Blacks move up in seniority (in businesses) things will change."

Mae D. Mosley: "Milwaukee is a community in transition. I have seen change over the last five to 10 years. The Leaders Forum was a great avenue for newcomers to get connected. I am hopeful some new organizations will step up and carry on what was started."

Cristoper Flowers: "The business climate is hot for individuals ‘in the loop.’ There are many opportunities for Black professionals if you know the right people and are willing to come out of their ‘comfort zone’ and network."

Dale Gilliam: "The business climate in Milwaukee could be much better if people of color would do business with one another and not depend on others for our success." |

Dr. Deryl Davis Fulmer
by Patricia O’Flynn-Pattillo
Excitedly animated, Dr. Deryl Davis Fulmer, began, "I have been reading the profiles. I like what you are attempting to achieve. "I have a vision, a citywide vision. We have to think big, not in a small space. We must think outside our comfort zone for the betterment of Milwaukee. "That is what led me to join my service learning team in bringing together many community-based organizations, churches, schools, businesses and government officials for a WALK AGAINST POVERTY." Why aren’t there more Black doctors?
by Roland A. Pattillo, MD Professor/Director of Gynecology Oncology, Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta
African Americans represent 13% of the United States population yet only three to four percent of U.S. physicians. Is this a new revelation or has it been a problem well recognized and high on the priority list of "issues of concern" by leaders in education, sociology and health care? Read more |

From new technology to mentoring, it’s not your father’s barbershop anymore
by Barbara White
