In Our Prayers
Brian Pickens, a Wauwatosa West High School Junior aspiring to attend the University of Miami in the Electrical Engineering program, was admitted into Children's Hospital of Wisconsin's pediatric Intensive Care Unit suffering from heart failure with no known cause or family history.

Brian’s hospital stay was for five weeks. He remains under the doctor’s care as he waits to get on the list for a new heart.

Brian’s first symptoms were believed to be distress associated with asthma. Three weeks later, he was admitted to the hospital and properly diagnosed with heart failure. Many in the community have come together to show the young man some love on October 6, Miracles & Blessings a non-profit based organization will host a charity event at the Mary Ryan's Boys & Girls Club 1:00pm to 6:00pm as part of an heart awareness campaign and charity event for Brian. Guardian Angels leader visits Brew City

Milwaukee Common Council President Willie Hines listens as Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels, talks about the positive impact his famed organization can have in helping to reduce crime on the city's streets. Sliwa was in MIlwaukee recently at the invitation of Alderman Tony Zielinski and other city officials to explore the feasibility of establishing a Guardian Angels chapter here. Milwaukee has had at least two previous chapters over the past 20 years. Sliwa also toured a Northside and Southside neighborhood. (photo by Harry Kemp)

"Sunday Morning Prayer" by Charles Bibbs ©

Dr. Joan Prince

Several years ago, we began to look at best cities for African Americans. "Black Enterprise" Magazine had identified a number of cities, mostly in the South, that registered highest Black per capita incomes, entrepreneurial establishments, educational institutions and college graduates. Additionally, these cities became magnets as new graduates either returned or remained thereby augmenting the professional pool and exponential growth. Designation of the cities was the impetus for the beginning what has become a four-year journey for the "Milwaukee Community Journal." Read more

Jason Newton, WISN Channel 12’s (right photo) new face on their weekend morning show is acutely aware of the fact he has some pretty big shoes to fill, not only on the air with co-host Portia Young, but in the community as well. Pulse of the Community

Question of the Week: "Wisconsin leads the nation in underage, high school drinking. Each year, about 2,100 state residents die from alcohol or drug related accidents. What can we do about this?"

Tarah Mcvey: "We as a community need to stop being "friends" with our kids. We need to PARENT them. So many (parents) want so much to be their (children’s) friend that many of the rules they should be abiding by are turned a blind eye."

Jeremiah Mcvey: "We need to stop denying that it’s a problem and actually do something about it. Parents need to be more involved in their kids lives and know where they are and with whom. And if they don’t like it, don’t allow them to."

Dr. Kirk E. Harris: "Youth need support, role models, guidance and love. Adults need to concentrate on connecting with young people. The more caring adults in a youth’s life the less likely they are to engage in risky behavior."

Talonda Brown: "I think that teens turn to drinking to fit in. If more kids were involved in meaningful activities such as music, dance, volunteering, they wouldn’t have time to fit in."

This Brewers' fan loves slugger Prince Fielder so much, he wants him to run for president of the country. His feelings are understandable since Fielder is having a career season in homeruns and other statistical categories this season for the team as it pursues a playoff spot. (photo by Harry Kemp)

Politics 101-Part II: Do Repubicans really hate black people? ‘Some might think that they do’

by Hazel Trice Edney
Editor’s Note: In 2004, Black people voted 89 percent for the Democratic presidential candidate and 10 percent for Bush. Some pundits argue that the Democratic Party is the best hope for African Americans, given the chilling Right Wing bent of Republicans. But some of the nation’s most respected civil rights leaders say the faithfulness of Black voters is not rewarded by Democrats and not desired by Republicans. This two part series. Read more
