Focusing on Financial Literacy

Public and private entities to offer week-long literacy workshops

Knowing how to set and keep to a budget is of critical importance to many area households. A coalition of businesses, school, government agencies and businesses will offer a whole week of financial literacy workshops during Money Smart Week between October 2 and 7.

More than 150 workshops and seminars will be offered during the week throughout Southeastern Wisconsin as part of the Money Smart Week observances.

The sessions are designed to help consumers learn how to better manage their personal finances.

Participants include the Milwaukee Urban League, the Council for the Spanish Speaking, the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative, UW Extension, the Social Development Commission and a wide variety of banks and credit unions. Subjects to be covered include financial management, identity theft, protection from scams, investments, home ownership and how to start a business.

Money Smart Week is based on a similar campaign that has been held in the Chicago area since 2002 that has been successful in helping hundreds of families learn how to better handle their finances. To get a complete list of the many Money Smart Week activities, look for a complete calendar of Money Smart events at area banks and credit unions or at the Social Development Commission website at www.cr-sdc.org.
