Alderman Davis and MPS partner to recruit for Milwaukee Youth Council
Alderman Joe Davis, Sr.
Milwaukee Alderman Joe Davis, Sr. (District 2) is reaching out to Milwaukee Public Schools in a joint effort to recruit Milwaukee’s best and brightest leaders to take part in the Milwaukee Youth Council.
The alderman will be speaking to the student council groups in MPS high schools and offering students the opportunity to be a part of the council for the upcoming year.
The council is designed to serve and advance the interests of city youths as a representative body in government through a working partnership with the Common Council and the mayor.
“I strongly believe that the youth council is a legitimate way of giving our young people a voice in their affairs while also getting them engaged in civic life and, hopefully, sparking their interest in public service,” Alderman Davis said.
The group was originally formed in 2006 and many of its past members have achieved academic and professional success since their tenure on the council.
“Young people have valuable goals and ideas and we have created a unique forum for them to develop those goals and ideas,” the alderman said. “We are reaching out to leaders in our high schools to find this year’s council members,” the alderman said.
The alderman, working in conjunction with MPS staff, will be speaking to students across the city about the council through November. The alderman also extends the Youth Council application process to those students in private or charter schools throughout the city and looks forward to working with all applicants.
