Congratulations—Salute to family graduates

I-Witness knows she is a bit behind on the many wonderful stories in our community. Though a little late, these stories are timeless.

My niece, Leonie Keith and my cousin, Nicole Pointer graduate from MATC as part of the Class of 2010. Nicole received her degree in Human Services.

Leonie’s degree is in Business Administration and computers. Both of the young women are truly talented. Leonie is a special story, born a twin, her sister who died at birth. Weighing only 3 lbs., Leonie fought to stay on this earth. Of course, the medical folks counted her out, saying she wouldn’t make it.

But she proved them all wrong. Though she had some developmental issues, a combination of loving parents, extended family and a great stepfather helped Leonie overcome her obstacles. Never once was she made to believe she was supposed to be different.

It was a major battle getting the Milwaukee Public Schools to provide service to her and her special needs.

After watching Leonie all her life, fight for dignity, working hard despite of her health issues, all I can say is my niece is living life like it’s golden with a degree in her hand. Oh, did I forget to mention Leonie also works two jobs? She is a miracle and has made us all proud.

Hey Nicole, I am equally proud of you. Both you and Leonie have made our family so proud. You are conquerors.

As the elder of this family now, all I can say is keep doing the ’am thang! The universe is yours and you have claimed it. Now dance Nicole. Dance Leonie dance! Keep advancing that next generation. I love it!
