A salute to Mothers, the bulwark of the family

Among the various press releases that came across the MCJ news desk was a cover story by a popular Black weekly magazine on actress Kim Porter, who not too long ago bore former boyfriend, rap mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, twin daughters. Both children are pictured on the cover with the proud and smiling mother.

The cover story is obviously a salute to Mother’s Day, which is this Sunday, May 11.

The magazine’s choice of Ms. Porter for the cover was a good one. We found her story inspiring and admirable.

It takes a truly remarkable woman to balance an acting career and entrepreneurial endeavors with the demands of single motherhood in raising four children--all of whom she had with Combs.

Porter exemplifies today’s mother. Though some dad’s are not involved in the day-to-day demands of parenthood for a myriad of reasons (though Combs is reportedly very involved in the lives of his children), Mothers--particularly Black mothers like Ms. Porter--continue to be the bulwark of the Black family.

They use their instinctive nurturing gifts, fearlessness and inner strength to provide, inspire, educate, love, and when need be, chastise their children, giving them the necessary tools to be productive, contributing men and women, moving the next generation forward, motivated by the "Mother Wit" and wisdom of the one who gave them life.

While we believe it takes two parents to raise offspring and a concerted effort must be made by Black America to keep alive the institution of marriage and the complete Black nuclear family, it is good to know the power of motherhood is still a strong and vital force in our community and the nation as a whole.

From the staff and management of the Milwaukee Community Journal, we wish all mothers a "Happy Mother's Day."
