Events in the Milwaukee County Parks System From September 15 – October 2

September 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27, 29 & October 2: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Walker Square Farmers Market: You can buy your produce fresh from the farm. Vendors also offer plants, flowers, produce and more. Located at 1031 South 9th Street.

September 15 – September 22, Jazz in the Park, Cathedral Square, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.: Jazz in the Park is Milwaukee’s favorite free, outdoor, summer music series, featuring an eclectic lineup of jazz, big band, funk, R&B, reggae, blues and more. Performers come from across town or across the country. Concerts take place Thursday evenings, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. from June 2 through September 22, in Cathedral Square Park, located at 520 East Wells.

September 17-October 1, Saturday Night Movies, Veteran’s Park, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.: The Saturday Night Movies at Veteran’s Park begins this Saturday, September 17, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Gift of Wings present the movie night, and the first Saturday night movie to be shown is Up, rated PG. Veteran’s Park is located at 1010 North Lincoln Memorial Drive.

September 17, Washington Bark Days, Washington Park, 10:30 a.m: Approaching its sixth year, Bark Day is a fund-raiser for local nonprofit organizations in Milwaukee related to dogs and the parks. This year Residents for Off-Leash Milwaukee Parks and Friends of MADACC are the organizers and beneficiaries of the event. With the addition of Friends of MADACC, Washington Bark Day will add a walk through the historic park as a fund-raiser. Washington Park is located at 1859 N. 40th Street.

September 17-September 18, Global Union Music Festival, Humboldt Park, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Hear performers from Congo, Colombia, Bulgaria, France (by way of Spain), Italy and Ghana at this world-wide party of the summer playing in beautiful Humboldt Park for two days. Six bands we love so much, we refuse to charge you for it. Yes, it’s FREE. And it’s good. Humboldt Park is located at 3000 South Howell Avenue.

September 17-September 18, Orchid Show & Sale, Mitchell Park Domes, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: The Wisconsin Orchid Society and Mid America Congress will present the “Falling in Love with Orchids” fall show this weekend at the Domes. The show is open to all ages and Orchid growers will be on hand at the event to answer questions. Hundreds of Orchids will be on display and a sales area will be open to purchase plants and growing supplies. The Mitchell Park Domes is located at 524 South Layton Boulevard.

September 18, Bug Day, Wehr Nature Center, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.: INSECTS RULE! Join us in the grasshopper jump-off, watch beekeepers work Wehr’s resident honeybee hives and meet LOTS of live insects (and their arthropod relatives). Join us as we get up close as Wehr celebrates this often-misunderstood group of animals. There will be experts on hand to answer your insect questions, crafts for kids, and even a chance to enjoy an insect snack. Yes we mean eat an insect! No pre-registration required so grab the larvae and scurry over for all the six-legged fun. Wehr Nature Center is located at 9701 W. College Avenue.

September 18, Rock the Green Concert, Veterans Park, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Rock the Green is the Midwest’s Premier Near-Zero Waste Music Festival. The mission is to entertain, engage and educate the audience by combining a world-class concert with a no-pressure sustainability experience. The event features music by The Fray, Ben Folds, Fitz and the Tantrums, Michelle Branch, Parachute and Evan Christian – performing live in a gorgeous outdoor setting, at Veterans Park on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee. General admission is $25. Veteran’s Park is located at 1010 North Lincoln Memorial Drive.

September 19, The Legends II Golf Tournament Finals, Brown Deer Golf Course, 8 a.m.: The Village of Manor Park in conjunction with Milwaukee County Parks is giving golfers a chance to win prizes and their claim to fame. The net champions of each division who won the qualifiers have now advanced to the finals at Brown Deer Golf Course, where they’ll play for free, on Monday, September 19, 2011. Brown Deer Golf Course is located at 7625 N. Range Line Road.

September 23, Nite-Glow Golf, 8:30 p.m., Warnimont Golf Course: This Friday night experience golf after dark at Warnimont Golf Course. Only tees, flag sticks and holes are illuminated during this experience and players use glow-in-the-dark golf balls. Warnimont Golf Course is located at 5400 South Lake Drive.

September 24-November 6, Little House on the Plains Fall Mum Show, Mitchell Park Domes: Visit the show dome September 24 to November 6 and experience the pioneer days when you walk amid a prairie scene filled with colorful mums and grasses, and an old-fashioned cabin with prairie dogs and antique farming equipment.
