Final resting place for Dr. and Mrs. King nears completion

Atlanta /PRNewswire/--The reinterment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King together in a new, enlarged, double crypt will be completed in November, it was announced today.

Work to complete the reinterment of Dr. and Mrs. King together in one crypt will begin this week. The block of Auburn Avenue where The King Center is located will be closed to traffic for one day to allow for the construction of a temporary crypt that will house Dr. King’s casket until the new enlarged crypt is ready.

His temporary crypt will be placed a few feet east of Mrs. King’s temporary crypt. It is expected that the construction of the permanent, enlarged crypt will be completed the week of November 20.

The wider, permanent crypt will be placed on the site of Dr. King’s existing crypt in the reflecting pool at the King Center’s Freedom Hall Complex in Atlanta, Georgia, and it will be otherwise similar in form and made of Georgia marble like Dr. King’s current crypt.

The reinterment will comply with the final wishes of Mrs. King, as carried out by her family. Dr. and Mrs. King’s four children will hold a special dedication ceremony marking the reinterment shortly after construction is completed. The date and time will be announced later.

Mrs. King, who is currently interred in a temporary crypt approximately 60 feet from Dr. King’s existing gravesite, died on January 30, 2006. Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
