For the Sake of Aaron, Celebrating Our Black Men
Bibbs’ art serves as logo for new series

by Patricia O'Flynn Pattillo
Black Art enthusiasts have long admired, respected and sought the depth, dimension and relevance of internationally famous Charles Bibbs’ work.
His art graces the homes of the super rich, major corporations and innumerable museums. And, his lithographs, in numbered quantities, warm the abodes of multi-ethnic connoisseurs who know quality when they see it.
How magnificent it was then to view one of his newer works, "Men of All Seasons" and be granted permission to use its image as a year-long logo for the newspaper’s 2006-07 focus: "For the Sake of Aaron: Celebrating Our Black Men."
"Men of All Seasons" shows four men, so closely united that they appear simultaneously as one. Eyes intensely focused and directed straight ahead, their feet connote motion syncopated with symmetry.
Carrying newspapers, a briefcase, a valise, and a document undefined, each item held tightly speaks volumes of the virtues that "Men of All Seasons" must have, according to Bibbs.
"SUCCESS" is a dominant tenet shown on pages from NNPA member papers featured in the painting including the "Black Voice," owned by Cheryl and Hardy Brown. "S" represents "success," "U" means "understanding," "C" stands for "courage," "E" boasts the importance of "esteem," "S" connotes "self-acceptance," and "S" expresses "self-confidence."
Hidden in less conspicuous locations, such as the arms and other sites, are additional assets that the artist has found significant in the development of true men. "loyalty," "wisdom," "reverence," "sense of direction" and "charity" all strengthen Bibbs’ depiction of Black manhood in this 21st century.
We thank Charles Bibbs, artist extraordinaire for his insight and artistic representation through "Men of All Seasons." This image will inspire us weekly as we spotlight and highlight Black men in the Milwaukee community who epitomize all of the virtues that Bibbs has identified.
Follow us weekly as we bring "Men of All Seasons" to life. "For the Sake of Aaron: Celebrating our Black Men" will celebrate the artistry of Charles Bibbs and the fine Black role models that make Milwaukee a better place.
