Milwaukee Public School Board Director and Vice President Charlene Hardin was commended Monday by the Milwaukee Branch of the NAACP for her work in support of public education.
Hardin was one of eight Wisconsinites the organization recognized during the civil rights group’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision, which effectively ended the practice of "separate but equal" racial segregation in public education.
MPS Superintendent William Androkopoules attended the event, which was held at the NAACP’s offices at 3500 N. 26th St.
"I am so pleased to receive this award from the NAACP," Hardin said. "My involvement in public school education grew from my awareness of the civil rights movement and recognition of the need for the children of Milwaukee to have an advocate.
"Being recognized as a voice for the children makes this award especially gratifying."
"We are happy to recognize the work and effort Charlene Hardin has provided in support of public education in Milwaukee," said Jerry Ann Hamilton, president of the Milwaukee Branch of the NAACP.
"She is an outstanding advocate for public education for all, and her action in her position epitomizes what Brown v. Board of Education was intended to accomplish."
The keynote speaker for the Milwaukee NAACP celebration was Stan Johnson, president of the Wisconsin Education Association.
