IOU Sports and Milwaukee area schools to participate in WNBA season opener

Images of Us (IOU) Sports, a Milwaukee-based organization for girls and women in sports and sports-related careers, will be traveling to Chicago on Tuesday May 23, to participate in the WNBA Chicago Sky’s inaugural game against the WNBA’s 2005 World Championship team, the Sacramento Monarchs.

The tip-off will take place at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion, located at 1150 West Harrison Street, Chicago Illinois.

IOU Sports, who seeks to empower girls and women through education and sports will select 12 girls from two of its partner sites, COA Burleigh Center and 21st Street School, to serve as "ball girls" during the ceremony.

Founder and CEO of IOU Sports, Bernell Hooker, is excited to expose young girls to a positive atmosphere and groundbreaking event. "The girls will hand over WNBA basketballs to the Chicago Sky players. This will be such a great opportunity for these young girls to experience. They will meet players such as Candace Dupree, the Sky’s first draft pick from Temple University, Stacy Dales, Nikki McCray and the rest of the Sky team.

"We want to capture their excitement and bring it back to Milwaukee," Hooker said. The May 23rd face-off against the Monarchs will mark the Chicago Sky’ijs first game as a WNBA team."

IOU Sports will be providing transportation to the May 23rd game, as well as other Chicago Sky home games throughout the season.

High school teams, AAU and other league teams and fans alike may attend Chicago Sky home games at $30 per person.

IOU Sports is dedicated to helping Milwaukee be a part of the WNBA, despite Milwaukee not having its own team.

"We are honored as a community organization to be a part of this ‘Herstorical’ moment! The WNBA is celebrating its 10-year anniversary and the Chicago Sky is the newest member in the league.

"We now can share, educate and empower girls in our city with women who are role models and leaders in the sports field. The Chicago Sky is so close by that we now can adopt this team as our team," said Hooker. Chicago Sky’s opening festivities includes the singing of the National Anthem by minority owner, Michelle Williams, third member of the Grammy-award winning group Destiny’s Child.
