In Milwaukee, I-Witness will never run out of Diva’s. There’s the Gallery Lounge, Diva Social Club, The Fly Divas over at Club Manhattan, Motown Divas, the Literary Divas’ Book Club, the Diva list goes on and on.
Then there is "Diva’z Entertainment" co-owned by Brenda Hughes and Tracie Johnson who host monthly entertainment events for young adults who want a place to have fun.
This is Diva Brenda Hughes’ birthday and they had a full celebration going on. Dinner and Poetry was held at Crom Wellness Complex. Brenda and Tracie threw a good party with special touches.
Roz Dandridge, the new radio personality on 98.3 Darryn D’s "In the Basement Crew," was the Mistress of Ceremonies. I-Witness knew we were in for a treat, because she is the funniest person I know.
Everything was set up so beautiful. The Diva’z girls are classy. "Cakes by Kimberly" was in the house. This lady is truly talented.
She had a full Diva sheet cake that was huge and then there was Brenda’s birthday cake, which was made to look like a hi-heeled shoe with a matching purse in the colors of Brenda’s dress.
It was too sharp. Mints and taco salads were laid out for snacks with peppermints everywhere.
DJ Jazz provided dinner music. There was a feast fit for a king (or should that be queen).
I had some of the best mac and cheese I’ve eaten in a while, along with cabbage greens, ham and real mashed potatoes. You name it and it was soooo good.
After we all feasted, Roz took to the mic. She had us Rollin’ on the floor, Chris and Kaisha Wilson were there celebrating their first anniversary and you know it, Roz started having flashbacks about her first anniversary. She had us in tears.
The Johnson’s were also having a baby and she was starting to experience flashbacks. She was hilarious. She needs her own show. Better yet, just tune in on the Basement Crew on 98.3 FM.
There were raffles with nice gifts. The Diva’z always get the gifts you don’t buy for yourself. There were polo shirts, flight jackets, a potato peeler, all kinds of nice things. Auriea Mosley and Dewayne Smoots were in the house.
The Poetry Show was next and did we get a treat, Poetess and "Slam Champion" Darlin’ Nikki opened the show.
Wit poetry is very healing. She said the Bush administration is like a severe yeast infection that won’t go away.
She spit what soul was, saying soul is cooking without a recipe, soul is the sway of your hips, soul is all you have when your body splits. She rocked us. She was awesome.
Nationally renowned poet Dan Vaughn, who did a season of HBO’s "Def Poetry Jam," recited numerous pieces of his works. One of my favorites is the one he did about his grandmother dying.
He did some new stuff as well. The one called "The Parents," which is a letter to parents at their son’s school telling them he will not apologize for being who he is. That one was really good.
He then dedicated the piece we all love to the newlyweds Tyrone and Evelyn Johnson who were in the audience.
If y’all have never heard Vaughn spit his piece of loving a woman. I advise you to bring an extra set of clothes. Vaughn has women shouting, sweating, walking, okay y’all. He takes you there.
He romanced and massaged them with every word he spit, he made love to the women like no man can and they loved it! It got so hot up in there folks was asking that the air conditioner be turned on, Holla! It was Hot! Hot! Hot!
Ms. Spit Fire was next. One would think after Vaughn they didn’t have anything left. But Ms. Spitfire took it to them.
She did this piece where she spoke of her love for music and how they had been in a longtime relationship and that music has always been there for her, but she had to tell music that she had been cheating on him with paper.
While she thought that nothing could ever tear her away from music and she still loved him, her newfound love, paper fulfills her even more. She found out when her and paper get together they make magic. But she told music that she still loved him too.
So she has decided that maybe they could have a threesome because she was going to keep seeing paper and music. "I hope you don’t break up with me."
She took us there. I loved it. She is very creative.
Roz is back and she has us snapping our fingers like they do in the poetry houses in Paris. Both Vaughn and Ms. Spitfire want to hire Roz. I’m telling you she’s too funny.
Hey Brenda and Tracie, you know I had a good time. Y’all know you should have turned the air conditioner on. So what that it was 39 degrees outside, Holla! I always have a great time with you all and you too Chawnett Hicks. Happy Birthday Brenda and wishing you many more!
