"Why Our Children Hate Us" authors return to Milwaukee by popular demand

by Taki S. Raton
"I am so excited to hear that the authors are coming back to Milwaukee," said social worker Ira Cunningham upon receiving a flyer at a recent community function. "I missed them on their first occasion back in February, but heard about their presentation from a friend of mine who attended. Then I just accidentally caught them on radio 1290 that following Tuesday. When I think about what is happening in our community, with our families and our children, I am convinced that these wonderful brothas’ and their book have some definite answers." Read more

The Easter bunny visited me and he brought me a new hat, a pretty shawl coat with leopard trim and a purse made by Fashions by Jacqueline’

The Henning also made me dinner all kinds of stuff and topped it off with desserts like red velvet cake and Betty’s homemade Bar B Q sauce. Dre’s hamster passed a way; I guess he went to join Dre. That saddened me. Read more

April 16 Speech receives a proclamation from the city of ATLANTA!

It’s a rarity that the press covers hip-hop artists receiving proclamations from their respective cities; instead we hear of arrest, search warrants and restraining orders. Well, April 16, 2007, the great city of Atlanta gave Speech the high honor of a proclamation. All of this in the midst of the Don Imus controversy, where he called some Black women "nappy" and "Ho’s". That controversy led to Hip-Hop being under fire because of the blatant disrespect of black women from other black men as well! Read more

The attacks—albeit subtle at this point—have begun. Political pundits and gatekeepers are starting to focus more attention on the presidential candidate, signaling to those of us who see a conspiracy behind every tree that Obama’s bid for the White House is more than an aberration, and is indeed a serious undertaking with a reasonable chance of success. Question of the Week: "With hypertension and sugar diabetes being so common among African Americans, what can we do to eat more health?

Photos and question by Harry Kemp

Erica Jordan: "Step out of our tradition and stop eating so many sweet potato potato pies and so much fried foods and add some exercise and more fruits and vegetables."

Fabrea Norwood: "I feel that we should quit eating a lot of junk food because it's not healthy for us. Also we need to exercise at least three times a week to keep us motivated."

"Cut back on cholesterol, lower our intake of sugar, eliminate pork from our diets, drink plenty of purified water, eat plenty of steamed vegetables and fruit. We should also bake or broil our meat instead of frying it."

Rev. Henry Robinson: "We should be more aware of what's good and what's not. Stay away from fried food as much as possible and eat more vegetables. Also regular check-ups and take our prescription medicine daily."
