All the customers know and love her because she does those little extra things like knowing what we like and telling us its on sale this week, she always ask how our day is and she always has that beautiful smile waiting on us. In today’s world where most businesses and their workers could care less about good customer service, people like Gwen are rare jewels. Hey, Gwen I do not know if Walgreen does appreciate you but your customers sure do. I love the way you do the things you do!

Jimmy V. Johnson--Sales Representative: "Making a marriage work requires more than love. I know this might sound old, but time and commitment are very important issues between a husband and wife. I’ve never been married, but I’m very willing to put the time in."

Teretha Martin--Technical Support/Webmaster: "I don’t think the institution of marriage is dying in the Black community. I’ve attended many weddings in the past 15 years. Many people I know are making commitments to each other; my children, relatives, friends, coworkers, boss--even myself. So far, we’re all still married."

Thomas E. Mitchell, Jr.--Editor: "I don’t think marriage is dying, but we are seeing a different attitude toward the institution. People either wait longer to marry or are in long-term relationships in which they live together (or apart) and have the kids without making it official."

Kia Marie Cook--Staff Reporter: "The institution of marriage--as a sacred union between man, woman and God--is not dying. But, there’s been a shift in the paradigm. People are choosing to focus on their careers before marriage. It’s a test of the briefcase before the ball and chain.

Representative Fields frustrated with state’s economic development programs

Audit reveals state falls short on minority contracting goals

Madison--State Representative Jason Fields (D-Milwaukee) was furious after reviewing the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau’s (LAB) audit of the state’s economic development programs.

The Department of Administration, which is responsible for overseeing state procurement activities, reported that minority-owned businesses secured $46.1 million in direct state agency purchases in FY 2004-05, a mere 2.8 percent of the $1.65 billion total.

"It is absolutely ridiculous that for the last 20 plus years we can’t seem to voluntarily meet a 5% goal," Representative Fields said referring to the 1983 state law stating that 5% of state agencies purchases should be with minority businesses.

According to the LAB, Wisconsin’s economic development programs are intended to create jobs, attract and retain businesses or otherwise encourage economic growth.

During the 2005-06 legislative session, Representative Fields introduced a number of bills aimed to increase employment within the minority community. More

Medical College shares the real facts about stem cells research

Stem cell research has become one the hottest topics in politics today.

Opposing sides in the debate over this relatively new medical discovery have elevated this new scientific research to a level of debate equal to, and in many ways, overlapping with the abortion debate.

Bush Administration policies have filtered down to states, where stem cell research has now become a priority issue in our state’s gubernatorial race, with incumbent Governor Jim Doyle and Republican challenger Representative Mark Green taking opposing sides on a central element of the debate, embryonic stem cell research.

As the debate and controversy has garnered front page coverage across the state, and dominated television and radio talk shows, however, it has become clear that there is as much confusion over the various types of stem cell research as there are questions about its potential.

In an effort to bring clarity to this debate, the "Community Journal" has enlisted the assistance of the Medical College of Wisconsin experts to help educate our readers on this important medical research. More
