There are two NFL teams who are undefeated, and they both reside in the NFC North. The Green Bay Packers isn’t a surprise with their 5-0 record, but the Detroit Lions are a surprise because they’re also 5-0.
The Packers won last season’s Super Bowl, but they still aren’t getting the respect that they deserve of a world champion. Nose guard B.J. Raji is unhappy that the Atlanta Falcons failed to show some respect to the Pack. Didn’t they remember the whipping they got in the Divisional round of the playoffs in January in their own backyard?
It looked like the green and gold had to show the Falcons who were in charge once again in their victory at the Georgia Dome, Oct. 9. Wait, they also embarrassed the Chicago Bears two weeks ago on their ragged field. Everybody better show the Packers some respect.
And that includes the St. Louis Rams, who visit Lambeau Field, Oct. 16. They will bring with them Milwaukee King and Wisconsin product Lance Kendricks. He couldn’t help them get a win in their first four games. They are 0-4.
The teams first met in 1937 when the Rams originated in Cleveland before moving to Los Angeles, then St. Louis. Both teams met every year from 1937-71 except in 1943 when the Rams didn’t have a team.
Green Bay trails in the all-time series, 42-45-2. The Packers met the Rams twice in the postseason, winning both times. A side note here: Retired quarterback Kurt Warner, who took the St. Louis Rams to Super Bowl victory, was in Green Bay’s camp as an “extra practice body for the scout team.” They didn’t take him seriously because they already had Brett Favre, Mark Brunell and Ty Detmer, so why did they need him on the roster?
The Packers will wear their 1929 throwback uniforms for this game. They wore them last year in a win at home against San Francisco. The jersey is navy blue with a gold circle in the front and the number in navy colors. The numbers and names on the back are gold. They will wear gold pants and gold helmets. The Pack might throw in an old T-formation. The team also wore throwback uniforms from the 1937 and ’39 seasons. They are 4-3 in alternate unis.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers continues to stay hot. He’s the top-ranked passer in the NFL with a rating of 122.9. He’s the first QB in league history to begin the season with a 110 rating or better for five straight weeks. Green Bay’s offense is still clicking. They are tied for first in the league with 173 points.
So much for Atlanta trying to burn the Pack on deep balls, right? Matt Ryan was intercepted twice in the game. Since they got beat on their own turf again, there will be no more trash-talking from them for a while.
Tackle Chad Clifton suffered a hamstring injury in the game in Atlanta. He will be out of action for a while. The Packers threw in Marshall Newhouse and rookie Derek Sherrod for sub for Clifton and Bryan Bulaga, who almost swore that he was ready to come back from his recent injury.
Well, Bulaga was limited in practice Wednesday. Knowing him, he might beg his offensive line coach and head coach Mike McCarthy to let him play Sunday. Clay Matthews and Charles Woodson didn’t participate, but they will play in the game against the Rams.
