Milwaukee Alderman Joe Davis, Sr. joins President Barack Obama in calling on Americans to honor civil rights leaders “who came before by striving toward their example,” as the U.S. celebrates February as National African American History Month.
The President issued a proclamation this week in recognition of the annual observation of National African American History Month, and called upon public officials, educators, librarians and Americans in general to observe the occasion with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities. Alderman Davis said it is just one of many contributions that the President has made to the African American community.
“After his historic, inspiring second inauguration on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I’m very pleased to see the President come forward with this initiative,” Alderman Davis said. “With the challenges that our country has endured in recent years, and the many trials we have yet to face, it’s encouraging to see President Obama continue to lead with the kind of optimism and hope it takes to pursue real change.”
Alderman Davis added that local groups that would like a commemorative copy of the President’s proclamation can email africanamericans@who.eop.gov to receive one within four to six weeks. Information about how the White House and the Obama Administration will celebrate National African American History Month, with events highlighting the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, is available at www.whitehouse.gov and www.whitehouse.gov/africanamericans.
