Karma: A Relaxation Spa

Maticia Barnes

Karma A Relaxation Spa began in Hotel Metro September 14, 2006. A second location emerged in the University Club Towers on Prospect Avenue in 2007.

Karma’s grand 5,000 square foot loft location at 727 N. Milwaukee Street, 3rd & 4th floors was born Fall, 2008 followed by another location inside the Ambassador Hotel in 2009.

All of these locations are owned and operated by Maticia Barnes, who is also an aesthetician, nail technician, Liquifan eyelash educator and Minx Manicurist.

The interior of Karma Spa on Milwaukee Street was translated by Maticia’s best friend of 25 years, Karma’s Director of Operations, Roger Thompson.

Karma offers the best in eyelash extensions, Minx manicures, luxurious pedicures, henna body art, waxing, LaStone Therapy, massage, couples treatments and more.

Couples from all around the country use this beautiful, romantic space to spend downtime together.

Karma also has amenities such as a spacious steam room, steam shower, relaxation beds and private lounges.

Karma Spa also specializes in-group spa parties with optional in-house catering.

Complimentary valet parking is offered Tuesday – Saturday from 10am-5pm and conveniently opens for business Tuesday – Sunday. Gift certificates are also available.

Spa owner, Maticia, always had an interest in beauty and fashion. This interest was nurtured further by meeting her best friend, Roger, at the age of 15.

Roger often used Maticia as his model for hair and fashion shows in the city as well as Chicago. Their friendship was forged forever.

Maticia eventually went to Chicago to dive into the beauty industry. This lead her to the award-winning Pivot Point Beauty International where she obtained her aesthetics license graduating first in her class.

While in school she apprenticed in high-end downtown Chicago spas where she absorbed everything she could and incorporated it into her practice.

Maticia received her post-graduated spa education from the accredited International Dermal Institute, founder of Dermalogica.

After relocating back to Milwaukee in 1996 she worked for a spa downtown for 3 years before opening her own spa in 1999.

Maticia has successfully built a loyal, happy clientele that she still has presently. Her clientele is comprised of local business owners, downtown dwellers, fashionistas and local celebrities.

Maticia aspires to open Karma Spas nationwide with Roger Thompson.

She also received her manicurist education from European Nail Academy in Brookfield, Wis. in 2004 graduating first in her class.

Madame: A Fashion Salon

Madame: (Originally derived from Latin, meaning “my mistress”) (Translated into French, literally signifying “my lady”)

Madame’s mission is to provide exclusive, fashion-forward clothing and accessories to the woman of any age that is free spirited, definitely has style and is independent of everyday trends.

She’s an innovator, a leader, a philanthropist and a well-rounded individual who embraces her femininity in a sophisticated, unassuming way.

She follows her own rules; she is very comfortable in her own skin and exudes confidence. She is refined and displays class, but is surely in touch with her sultry side.

She doesn’t like to live a life of repetition; so each day she chooses to be different and her style evokes a feeling of that freedom.

Her sense of style allows her to speak freely to the world each day without ever having to say a word.

Madame...a fashion salon opened to the world on June 28, 2009 by LaRhonda Bennett-Lewis and her husband Gary. Located on the historic Martin Luther King Dr. inside of the Park East Enterprise Lofts. Madame, a chic contemporary and edgy clothing salon for women offers three components most important to the discerning shopper:

* Convenient location
* Excellent customer service
* Distinctive merchandise

Madame's not just about fashion, but about a way of life. Whether we choose to accept it or not, image is always our first impression. Before we ever are allowed to say a word, our image speaks for us in volume.

“Fashion changes...styles remain” CoCo Chanel. This is one of my favorite quotes of all times as it relates to fashion. Meaning as unpredictable and transforming as fashion can be; one’s style must be incessant.

I feel that clothes should tell a story, create an image and inspire a lifestyle.

With a finely honed eye for fashion and style, Madame seeks to do just that, by offering a distinctly edited collection of clothing and accessories from a diverse group of known and unknown designers in and around the globe.

Madame thrives on change, never wanting to become complacent so as the weeks, months and seasons change so will Madame.

Stay fashionable tuned! Madame 2009

Buying your home: From offer to closing

Lisa Williams

What you need to know about buying a home.

Pre-Approval: Seeking complete pre-approval for financing prior to viewing or making an offer to purchase on a home. The seller is often leery of the stability and reliability of the buyer if the buyer is not pre-approved by being perceived as a weak buyer rather than a strong one.

Negotiating: Once you’ve decided on a house that’s in your price range you have to decide whether to pay the seller’s asking price or negotiate for a better price. Depending on the seller’s eagerness to close the transaction, the seller of the property will often become willing to pay some or all closing cost on the buyer’s behalf. Note that there are limitation on how much the seller is permitted to contribute.

Offer: When it’s time to make an offer, the real estate broker will often produce a standard form listing the price and other details of the purchase offer. This form should be read with great care, because, if accepted, it a binding contract. The agreement form should include: desired closing date; what comes with the house and what’s to be removed; and contingency clauses, which say you won’t buy the house unless you’re satisfied with a home inspection, certain financing is available, or other standards have been met.

Counteroffer: After the first offer, you may receive a counteroffer from the seller. Like your first offer, the counteroffer should be in writing. You may trade counteroffers with the seller several times until both parties reach an agreement or walk away from the deal. If you reach an agreement, you sign the counteroffer and you have a deal (subject to contingencies included in your contract). Again, do not sign any paperwork until you have consulted with your representatives.

Earnest Money: You’ll probably be required to make an earnest money deposit that will either be applied to your down payment or forfeited if you pull out of the deal for reasons not allowed by your offer. The check should not be made out to the seller; rather it should go to the real estate company and have trustee or fiduciary agent written after the name. Be sure the check is not deposited until your offer has been accepted.
