Spoken word competition for teens rescheduled
Voltage!, the citywide spoken word competition series for teens has been rescheduled from this Friday until after the new year. Following are the new competition dates: Friday, January 19; Friday, February 23; and Friday, March 23.
All events will be held from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, 325 West Walnut Street. Winners of each Voltage! event will earn $100 cash prize and a position on Wisconsin’s national teen spoken word team, which will compete at Brave New Voices next summer. Brave New Voices is a national competition that draws from a network of more than 300,000 teens from across the country.
In addition to this contest, Milwaukee teens are being encouraged to share their words and rhymes at a new monthly open mic for teens and gain mentorship through regular creative writing circles. All are coordinated through Teen Voices, the young adult division of Still Waters Collective.
Still Waters Collective is a resource and development network for writers of all ages, backgrounds, skill levels and genres. The Voltage! competition is one of several components of SWC Teen Voices, a series of programs, events and mentorship to strengthen the teen artist community and build leadership through literacy.
