Free Neighborhood Expo

Come and join the Northside YMCA for the First Annual Neighborhood Community Housing Resource Expo! The event will take place on Friday, November 17 at the Northside YMCA Gymnasium, 1350 West North Avenue from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The YMCA-Community Development Center, in collaboration with St. Francis Bank, a division of MidAmerica Bank, wants you to come and explore some of the resources that your community has to offer! There will be fun games, face painting, food and prizes, as well as a drawing for a free surprise. Get educated on what your community has to offer. Education is the key to opening the door to your new home.

This day in Black History

In 1892: One hundred and sixty one Black Americans reported lynched.

In 1938: Crystal Bird Fauset becomes the first Black woman elected to a state legislature in the U.S. acquiring this distinction by being named to the Pennsylvania House of Represenatives.

In 1960: Otis Smith becomes auditor general and the first Black politician to win a statewide election since reconstruction.

In 1966: Edward W. Brooke (Republican, Massachusetts) elected to U.S. Senate and became the first Black senator since the Reconstruction era and the first Black senator elected by popular vote. Racial violence was reported in forty-three cities in 1966, with eleven killed, more than four hundred injured and three thousand arrested.

Workshop for Black Mothers

It’s known that 80% of all African American children will spend part of their childhood living apart from their fathers. Additionally, 70% of Black children are born to unmarried mothers. And according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 63% of youth who committed suicide came from fatherless homes; 85% of all youths sitting in prisons grew up fatherless.

"Keys Black Mothers Need to Know to Empower Black Boys to Become Strong Black Men" will take place Saturday, November 18 at Coffee Makes U Black Coffee House, 2803 North Teutonia Avenue from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration deadline: Thursday, November 16.
