Teens to promote summer jobs program to teens

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett will join the students of Washington High School on Thursday, March 1, to launch the 2007 Summer Youth Jobs Program.

Students will demonstrate how easy it is to sign up online to participate in the summer internship program that offers teens the opportunity to "earn and learn" their way to a brighter future.

Previous participants will also speak about their experiences in the summer jobs program.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett created the Milwaukee Summer Jobs Program to offer high school students an opportunity to earn money and learn job skills through meaningful work experiences. Last year, the program placed close to 1,000 young people in summer jobs.

The City of Milwaukee will continue its efforts to link teens to summer jobs through three components:

o Working with the City of Milwaukee Internship Program, offering jobs in forestry, customer service, neighborhood planning, communications and more.

o Working with private sector employers, including professional opportunities in manufacturing, health care, retail, and many others.

o Working with nonprofit, community-based organizations or faith-based agencies.

The program is open to Milwaukee high school students between 16- to 20-years-old. Teens must apply online at www.city.milwaukee.gov beginning March 1, 2007.

Private employers interested in hiring youth interns may also apply online.
