The General Baptist State Convention of WI, Inc. (GBSC) held its 87th bi-annual board session October 17 – 20, 2011 in Milwaukee WI . The week of services was held at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church – Rev. Steven Harris was the host pastor.
On Monday, October 17, 2011 the large crowd of pastors, delegate members and friends of the GBSC, along with Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Senator Lena Taylor and Mayor Tom Barrett convened to witness the installation ceremony of Reverend Garry Levy- the 5th President of the organization. Special guests were members of the Wisconsin General Baptist State Convention, Inc., president – Reverend Dr. Robert Wilson, speaker. The Monday night services were monumental and visionary as both Rev. Levy and Dr. Wilson agreed that the two conventions will work collaboratively to support the mission needs of the Wisconsin community.
The week continued with services hosted by the auxiliaries of the GBSC. Tuesday, the Women’s Auxiliary (Dr. Bonita Smith, president), Wednesday, the Laymen’s Auxiliary (Deacon Albert Brown, president), and closed on Thursday evening, with President, Reverend Garry Levy delivering his inaugural address. The five year theme for the GBSC is: “Working together in unity to fulfill God’s purpose. 2 Corinthians 5:17-18.” The goals for the convention are Christ-Centered; Unity and Transparency. Levy stated to the delegates that, “I may be the face of the convention; however, it will take everyone to bring change.”
About the President
Rev. Levy is the pastor of True Love Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee. He has served as the financial secretary (2000-2011) and the vice president of the Congress of Christian Education (2006-2011). Rev. Levy is been a certified instructor, facilitating courses for the Old Testament
and Effective Bible Reading. He has taught in various state leadership conferences of the GBSC and for the Wisconsin General Baptist State Convention.
Described as a community-oriented servant leader, preacher and teacher, Rev. Levy serves as the executive secretary to the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Greater Milwaukee. Rev. Levy has preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the greater Milwaukee area, Minnesota, Mississippi and Missouri. Rev. Levy has served as a Chaplin for Columbia-St. Mary’s and Aurora Health Care. He is very well known for his faithfulness to his calling to preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Rev. Levy is a graduate of the Melvin Gray School of Pastoral Studies. He has completed his Associate degree in Urban Ministry from Milwaukee Theological Institute, Baccalaureate of Arts degree in Biblical Studies and Masters of Divinity from Andersonville Baptist College in Georgia.
Rev. Levy was called to the ministry and preached his first sermon-“Jesus Only” on Sunday, January 17, 1999, under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Joseph J. Hughes, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee. Rev. Levy was ordained by a counsel of clergymen of the General Baptist State Convention, all members of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., on Sunday, December 2, 2001. In 2006, Rev. Levy became pastor of True Love Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee WI.
Rev. Levy is married to Dr. Dessie Levy. When asked about his wife, a huge smile comes across his face. Pastor Levy says, “God has truly blessed me with a beautiful, talented and loving wife. She is bone of my bone.” They have three beautiful children: Tammy (Clenest), Garry, Jr., and Ary; and four grandchildren: Amani, Elijah, Isaiah, Garry, III and Clenest, III.
