In the spirit of New Orleans and the celebration of community revival after Hurricane Katrina, we remember those who perished and the indomitable spirit of the people of New Orleans, with a rich history and strong traditions.
They celebrate lifeoriginal artwork created for 2010 MCJ Gala, SECOND LINE
, living, death and every facet of life, with gusto and reverence. With spirited music of the brass band, old and young, alike, follow the bands as they meander from neighborhood to neighborhood swelling in number as they march along. Dressed in colorful costumes or Sunday best attire, umbrellas swirl, handkerchiefs dance in the air and canes and batons twirl to the music, and families, neighbors and krews work together to make these celebrations festive and definitely memorable.
The Second Line dance is always led by a leader but the participants are equal in importance and so will be the honorees of the MCJ Gala's Second Line, led by Walter and Hester Besteda, Grand Marshall and Mistress. With stepping by the Milwaukee Steppers led by Cynthia Wilson and music provided by an authentic New Orleans band, the honorees will be saluted for their accomplishments and their example for the Dr. Thomas Scholars.
The twelve students will receive $ 2000 stipends toward their educational pursuits. They all are honor roll qualified and matriculate in Wisconsin colleges, HBCU's and universities throughout the United States.
With funds from the Ernestine O'Bee bequeath and those from the Janet Green Pegues memorial, post graduate students will be funded for extended studies after having received the annual stipends throughout their undergraduate years.
Over 500 people are expected to attend with sponsors, todate, including MillerCoors; Johnson Controls; Quarles and Brady; MPS; WHEDA; Coca Cola; Medical College of Wisconsin; Salvation Army; BF Companies; and others to be announced.
Tickets in advance are $ 85 and include buffet, silent auction, beads, masks and other New Orleans souvenirs.
Join us as we salute our Best of the Best in Milwaukee...the honorees, the students, their families and the corporate citizens who continue to support this most noble effort.
