Top Eight Tax Time Mistakes

Madison--With this year’s tax deadline only a few days away, and nearly 30% of residents having yet to file, Secretary of Revenue Michael L. Morgan announced the "Top Eight Tax Time Mistakes" at a press conference in Milwaukee today.

Secretary Morgan, along with Deborah Blanks, executive director for the Social Development Center (SDC), made the announcement at the SDC-Richards Street Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site, which serves the largest number of residents in the City of Milwaukee.

"Errors on your income tax return can delay any refund you have coming by days or even weeks," stated Secretary Morgan.

The announcement of the "Top Eight" was made to help curb the mistakes so hard working Wisconsin families can get their refunds as quickly as possible.

The "Top Eight Tax Time Mistakes" are:

1. Not claiming all deductions or credits you may qualify for. These may include:

o Veteran’s and Surviving Spouse Property Tax Credit
o Farmland Tax Relief Credit
o Tuition Deduction
o Earned Income Tax Credit
o Homestead Credit

2. Self-Employed filers claiming an incorrect amount of estimated tax credit;

3. Basic math errors. You can avoid these errors by e-filing your return;

4. Incorrect bank account information. If you are using computer software from last year, double-check the automated fields (name, address, bank account, etc.) to make sure those fields are still current;

5. Incomplete returns filed. Look at all sides of the return so you don’t miss a page;

6. Illegible or incomplete mailing addresses;

7. Claiming federal rather than Wisconsin withholding. Use the Wisconsin numbers, not the federal;

8. Forgetting to submit Form WRA when claiming the Homestead credit.
