U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner (Republican) from Wisconsin says 1st lady Michelle Obama “Has a Big Butt”January 5, 2012 // 0 Comments
Before I get into the specifics as to who said what , first let me state the following. White men have always had an obsession with the bodies of our Black women. Since the days of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra White males have lusted for our women. Need I even go into the atrocities which took place during the times of slavery and beyond. This is why the comments made by Sensenbrenner were no surprise to me.
However, I am somewhat surprised and very outraged that the Chairman of the 96th Congressional Committee on Standards and Official Conduct would make such comments. I am also surprised that there is no outcry by the elected leadership, and here is why. The comments that were made by the Republican Congressman from Wisconsin in my opinion were not only racist but sexist and an affront to all. What other types of comments is he making around the good ole boys when he thinks no one else is listening. What is this very powerful political figure saying, thinking, or even acting on as his prejudices relate to other groups such as Asians, Latinos, Gays, Native Americans or any other group that doesn’t fit into his idea of what the perfect person is supposed to look like.
According to witnesses this is how it went down. While talking to a group of church members at Christmas bazaar at St. Aidans Episcapal Church in Hartford, Sensenbrenner assumed it was safe to make wise cracks about the First Lady’s “ Big Butt” in such a heavily Republican area. Why else would he assume such a thing had not these types of comments had been generally accepted (par for the course) in Republican circles. Well, times they are a changes because if not for church member Mrs. Ann Marsh-Meigs exposing the Congressman, he may have gotten away with it. While Mrs. Marsh-Meigs was busy knitting sitting next to Sensenbrenner he continued to go on this tirade about the first Lady’s dariar until finally “she felt he had to be called on it.”
In conclusion, I agree with the 72 year old retiree, Mrs. Ann Marsh-Meigs in that we all need to call (maybe even recall) Rep. James Sensenbrenner ( R ) form Wisconsin on his cold and callous remarks. I must sat that I was encouraged by the fact that at least one of our African American elected officials had the courage to stand up and blast the Congressman for his comments. U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore, called his comments “ distasteful and demeaning,” she went on to say that his comments were inappropriate and that they have no place in public discourse”. I think that it is clear to see why we have gridlock on both the state and federal level. We see that the party of Lincoln is still fighting the Civil War. Remember an injustice to one is an injustice to all.
