The United Black Citizens Party (UBCP)

The United Black Citizens party (UBCP) held an educational drive to inform Milwaukee citizens of their intent to establish a political party to begin to deal with some of the issues facing our community at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society.

The UBCP was formed in June 2006 as a pro-active political party. Their mission is to provide political structure for Milwaukee’s Black community and to actively challenge government policies that have been created by both democratic and republican parties to tear down the Black community.

Upon my arrival, Brotha Bobby X and other members of the group were signing up folks to volunteer for the upcoming gathering of signatures that is required to establish a political party. They will need over 10,000 signatures. Brother Bobby X told me they were very please with the results of their efforts today and that they were thankful to the community for the support they have shown them the last two days.

I asked why he sees a need for a Black political party. His response: "Look around, look at the state of your community. The condition our community is in affects our health, our families and our over all being. We want no more liquor stores or these payday loans places in our community."

I asked could your efforts be interpreted as legislating morality. He responded, "yes it could be looked upon that (way) but for any one who has a problem just tell them to look around at their community we have over 336 liquor stores in our community. Why? We must get these predators out of our community they are contributing nothing to our community just sucking us dry. Let us replace them with businesses that will benefit our community."

The UBCP Platform is an interesting one, they encourage limiting of liquor stores and payday loans: they support the voting rights act, support the call for a city wide police commission, support city projects under a million dollars to go to those of us living within the community.

The organization supports all parolees right to vote, senior citizens to have their property tax frozen until changed, support vocational training be included in the MPS requirement for graduation, abolish elected officials in outlying counties to introduce and or vote on legislation that effects our community and several others.

Bobby X says: "Black men have to start leading and showing the way we can no longer accept the laws that inhibit us or keep us buying into the media projection of us. It is the policies from both parties that have created our cultural destruction.

"The way the future is structured our children have nothing but jail to look forward to and we must change that and now. There is only one thing that children will be doing--that is going to jail.

"We must position ourselves to challenge the policies being legislated against; our community must have voice in its direction and future."

The group plans to start in January to acquire 10,000 signatures to become a legal body on the ballot for the coming local and presidential races.

Anyone interested in running for office can come and take the group’s training. However, look forward to hearing more from these young people in the future.
