Mayor Tom Barrett, Common Council President Willie Hines, community activist and historian Reuben Harpole and noted businessman Beechie Brooks unveil the street sign in honor of Mattiebelle Woods, the “First Lady of the Black Press” at the intersection of North 27th and West Center Streets. The four men were among a host of community, business and political leaders who gathered to honor Woods, who was a long time, award winning social columnist for the Milwaukee Courier. She began her career with the Chicago Defender and later joined the staff of the Milwaukee Star. Woods was also a stringer for Jet Magazine. She died in 2005 at age 102. (Photos by Yvonne Kemp)
