UWM has something great

in mind for you

You can sort out college options in one stop at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s popular Open House Friday, October 27, and Saturday, October 28.

The free, hands-on event at the UWM Union, 2200 East Kenwood Boulevard, features more than 175 booths representing the university’s 11 schools and colleges. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

The event highlights what Wisconsin’s second largest public research university has to offer. You can try out activities, talk to faculty and tour the campus. You can get answers to your questions about everything from extracurricular activities to financial aid and housing.

Open House also offers help for students who want to apply for scholarships for the 2007-2008 year. Many of those applications are due between November and March.

If you’re unsure about what you may want to study, you can visit UWM’s Office of Career Development, which is offering free assessments that can help you choose a major or career. Or, you can just browse the academic department’s exhibits and demonstrations. Some of the Open House activities will include:

o Watching a drawing demonstration
o Learning a bit of American Sign Language
o Having your blood pressure checked by a nursing student
o Tasting French foods like crepes

You can check out the campus on a tour led by a UWM student, or climb aboard a trolley for a view of Milwaukee’s East Side and lakefront. Both tours go on continuously throughout the two days. A number of individual schools and colleges will also offer tours of their facilities.

UWM offers 152-degree programs, including the largest College of Health Sciences in the Midwest, the largest nursing program in the state, and the state’s only accredited programs in architecture and information resources.

UWM continues to add new courses and programs that reflect the trends in the job market.

And, you can tailor your undergraduate education to fit your learning style. For example, you can choose your required introductory courses from a menu of those with a multicultural focus by participating in the Cultures and Communities certificate program.

Freshmen at UWM get extra attention because of the university’s commitment to offering access to success. Research shows that those who complete their freshman year of college are much more likely to remain enrolled until they complete their degree.

Programs include one-on-one freshman mentoring by a student, faculty or staff member, and an Early Warning System in which instructors team up with advisors to improve the progress of freshmen with unsatisfactory grades at the end of the fourth week of classes.

A number of programs provide special support for freshmen in writing, note taking and mathematics. And, if you’d prefer getting help from another student, the Peer Mentoring Center has undergraduate volunteers who tutor students on a walk-in basis.

You can register for Open House on the ground level of the Union the day of your visit. For more information, call the Department of Recruitment and Outreach at 414-229-2222. Adult students returning to college to finish a degree can call 414-229-6732 or visit UWM online at www.uwm.edu.
