Local youths recognized for community service and leadership

On Thursday, August 24, six members from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee were saluted for their community service and leadership with the 2006 Argosy Citizenship Award
The club members were honored by during a special awards ceremony at Cathedral Square prior to the evening’s Jazz in the Park concert presented by the East Town Association.
The award winners were Danielle Johnson, Latesha Rowsey, Michaela Beamon, Shaniece Ashford, Amber Baldwin and Kelsey Kosmitis.

To be considered for the Argosy Citizenship Award candidates had to submit a 100-word essay describing a community project they wish to implement at their club and submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, employer or relative.
One person from each the six Boys & Girls Clubs Branches received a $500 stipend to support his or her education and $500 in seed money to execute his or her community service project.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee is the oldest and largest youth-serving agency in Milwaukee.
It offers after-school and evening programming for children ages 6-18, focusing on those who have major life obstacles, most often poverty.
The clubs operate six branches and 19 school sites including Bethune Academy charter school and at Hadfield Elementary School in Waukesha, and Camp Whitcomb/Mason near Hartland. Membership to the clubs is only $5 per year, per child, but no one is ever-turned away based on ability to pay.
